LAS VEGAS — The son of a local judge has been charged over the brazen theft of $1.5 million in chips from Las Vegas' famous Bellagio Casino in December, police said Thursday.Anthony Carleo, 29, was detained in a room at the Bellagio on Wednesday, by undercover police officers pretending to be interested in buying the chips, police spokesman Ray Steiber told reporters.Investigators recovered $900,000 worth of chips from him, and have accounted for another $300,000 worth, he said. Most of the thief's haul was in $25,000 chips, a rare denomination that are difficult to cash without being noticed. The December 14 robbery startled the Las Vegas casino world with its audacity.A man in a motorcycle helmet charged into the casino at 4 am, brandished a gun and demanded money at a craps table. He received $1.5 million in casino chips, then bolted out the front of the posh resort and fled on a motorcycle. After his arrest Wednesday, Carleo was charged with of robbery with the use of a deadly weapon, burglary with use of a deadly weapon and trafficking in a controlled substance.Police said the drug charges resulted from a large amount of narcotics found in Carleo's possession. He is being held without bail pending a court appearance next Monday.Carleo is lodged at the county jail under his birth name, Anthony Assad. His father, George Assad, is a Las Vegas judge who issued a brief statement saying his family is "devastated and heartbroken" by the arrest. Copyright © 2011 AFP. All rights reserved. More »
